Thoughts on X-rated Panel Removal

Sakura Con just announced on their group via Facebook,

"Some rumors are circulating about mature content at Sakura-Con. It is true that there will not be any dating contest or swim suit contest style panels allowed anymore because of repeated years of policy violations in these events. However, it is not true that "MA" panels are no longer part of our programming track. We pride ourselves at Sakura-Con in providing a wide variety of programming, with content for all ages, spanning a broad spectrum of educational and fan oriented topics. Consider that Anime covers a wide range of genres and even popular titles may contain violence or adult themes not suitable for everyone. Ratings are provided in our schedule so everyone can make an informed choice about the panel, video or event they are attending. What has never been part of Sakura-Con programming is anything that is rated "X" or is considered "H" as we deem these unsuitable content for our event and not in keeping with our mission, so "Sakura-Con MA" should be understood as not containing this kind of content."

How does everyone feel about this? No more Dating Game or Swimsuit Contest; and possibly some other panels...I understand to an extent, but is it too far? Let's discuss.

Well considering that I never went to either events... xD Guess it won't have any real impact on my con. But sadly it's understandable. People can give adult badges to minors or get them into the panels somehow, as things can slip through the cracks at more popular events. Or things could just get way out of hand and into inappropriate subject matter even for a mature panel. That can ruin it for everyone since Sakura has been really driving home the "family friendly con" idea in the last few years. I can see why they'd want to crack down on things, even more so if it is an ongoing issue. Now if they try to take away the mature cosplay chess, that's another story. xD

And honestly I don't think it was too far. People were getting minors in or minors were getting in on their own. That is an issue as it is not only against con policy but can start working it's way into a legal issue if a parent finds out, and Sakura is trying hard to keep their image of being very family friendly. If it has been an on going issue I don't see the harm in taking out a couple panels where this issue has been glaring. It seems that even without the forums, this year is buzzing with quite a lot of panel plans. And given that there are tons of other adults panels, I don't think people will have a hard time filling the time they would have spent in those panels with something else. c: I doubt that they'd start looking to cancel other MA events based just on these two since that is a big highlight of my weekend (kids have to leave and I can be an adult. WHOO!) and also for a lot of others I'm sure. Unless this becomes a glaring issue this year or next at others panels I doubt that they will look at taking away any other panels. If they start trying to take away MA events all together, that is when I throw a small fit. Until then, it's a couple of panels. Let's not worry and just enjoy ourselves this year. c:

as for the dating panel, those are rarely even interesting the guy to girl ratio is usually 10 to 1 lol. the swimsuit thing, i cant see that really being an issue in any way considering it's swim suits. i went to the swimsuit thing last con and i couldn't find anything really x-rated about it. PG-13 maybe.

Eh sakura con just keeps getting more and more taken away from it. Do they also mean the anime dating game?

they're slowly becoming a convention for minors only from what it feels like.
they'll slowly take all the mature things out.

Yes it is the Anime Dating Game MA panel that has been discontinued. Speed Dating is still allowed.

To my understanding these two panels (Anime Dating Game MA/Anime Swimsuit Contest) both had previous years of violations and were not able to fix these issues and have been discontinued.

I have never been to the Anime Dating Game, but I have been to the Anime Swimsuit Contest in both 2012 and 2013. The contest in 2012 was very fun and entertaining. It had a comedy aspect to it that was quite charming (the winner was a life-size trio of Diglets with a sewn on bikinis.) I had a blast in 2012 and didn't notice any violations that I know of...However in 2013 things took a turn...There was an instance of a Jean Gray cosplayer taking her top off as well as another girl in a thong (both violations). There were lap dances and strip teases; which are not in violation but were so different from 2012s comedy acts. I was a bit disappointed because of the fun I had in 2012 watching the contest was not so much present in 2013 at all.

This isn't the fault of the panel runners however. The contestants choose their talents and costumes and actions in the contest so it was just a bit lack luster last year. The panel runners must have made some mistakes though that I am not aware of as an outside con-goer with no behind the scenes knowledge.

Sad the Swimsuit Contest is gone but there are other panels to fill my interest, and I understand somewhat why these two panels had to go. If they violated rules for numerous years they were putting Sakura Con on the spot. I just hope that not too many panels get the boot...Fan panels are a huge part of conventions and something I enjoy a great deal.

I love the funny MA panels (last comic standing, late night with voice actor ____) but banning stuff it limits the potential people who would go to it. I mean ok X rated porn stuff go to a strip club. But Sakura is not responsible if someone under 18 sneaks into MA/X rated panels and content. That falls on the shoulders of the parents.

Now where I'm from the Arizona conventions have a lot of MA and borderline X rated stuff but to enter you have to show your badge with your name and some sort of I.D. Unless they are getting away with it because all the anime cons here are held in hotels and the biggest one can fit in the Sakura dealer/artist alley hall.

if you knew him than you'd know there's actually a chance of this happening.

I agree the funny MA panels should stay, its just hard to separate my clean jokes form my mature ones, or more of what makes them MA.

I mean they have at least one id check and i forget the exact reason why they could not check it at the door, it could have been to save on time.

It really irks me how people put their responsibility on others and fault them because only they could enforce it.

I think it might be the same panelist who runs both so I assume THEY aren't going to have a dating game of any sort in 2014...So I'm not really sure if it's ALL dating games or just that panelist's dating game...

They're hacking and slashing so many things that soon nothing's going to be left worth attending the con for.

In my opinion when something bad happens at your con, deal with it and make it so that particular 'thing' doesn't happen - don't just cut it out. "don't cut off your nose to spite the face"

But that seems to be what they're doing.

Don't forget they also cut the forums AND are being nazis about room shares.
They have to understand what attendees find useful/fun and figure out a way to make those things happen while still maintaining their mission statement.

I went to the Anime Swimsuit Contest last year for the first time and it was fun. There was a violation though, they stopped one of the performers mid-dance. I believe it was because part of their costume didn't conform to certain contest/convention policies.
