Ever feel ashamed for how much you spend on cosplay?

I mean do you ever feel bad that you spend more money on cosplay than real clothes, getting a car, and ect?

I honestly do sometimes even though I don't have to worry about it much. However I also tend to put my full effort into just making one costume rather then a bunch every year.

I don't really spend much money on anything else, besides monthly dance lessons. And saving for college again, but I've had no issue with that (23, so I have a job and all). So, no. Some people spend hundreds a month on cars, some on dance lessons, some going out to bars. I choose to spend my money on fabric, wigs and propmaking materials and nerding out on the weekend.

I don't want to say always... but often. I end up spending hundreds all year on cosplay, then when the bills come in I wonder why I spent many paychecks for only a few days... When I was younger I used to cry when I spent too much, especially when I brought $200 dollars to the dealers room (hey, that was a lot for little 13 year old me). And I still kind of struggle with it now.

But its a hobby I really love, and as long as I can take care of my health and family first, then I think its alright. I still get a little embarrassed and lie when people ask how much I spent on a cosplay though...

Ashamed? Heck no! Concerned? Often times. I have to calculate how much I have to spend vs how much I need. Usually I buy what I need over time.

Shinobi - I have no life, where does my money GO?! I do have a job though, and I'll be 23 next Tuesday.
Powerline!Max - A Goofy Movie (Otakon 2015, completed)

I don't. I don't need any more "normal" clothes right now or I would buy them.

I have a car. If I didn't I wouldn't be spending so much on hobbies if I did need to get one because yes, that is much, much more important unless you live somewhere that a car is not necessary.

I pay my bills, I live my life - I spend disposable income how I want to. There's no shame to be had in that. That's how life under capitalism works. Now, I don't even like capitalism, but I'm not going to feel shame over being able to enjoy myself within it.

Almost everyone had hobbies - if they're destructive or preventing you from more important things you need to fix that or get help. But if it's just a hobby that's hurting no, who cares?

My current costume will come out to $300-ish. But it would cost me over $2000 to have someone else make it. So quite economic really.

I also spend $10-20 a month on GW2,a video game. Anyone who plays WoW pay level 20 pays $15 or so. People have hobbies, even more than one! It's normal, and normal to spend money on them.

Actually in the pipes:
- Remaking Ser Loras doublet.
- Luke Skywalker, A New Hope
- Wind Waker starter costume in swim material
Eventually: Paul from Dune, Faramir, Harry Sullivan

I don't.

Spending on necessities - bills, rent, food - always comes first. Once I've paid everything I need to and socked some away in savings, the rest is meant for fun!

The way I see it, it's no different from any other hobby. Non-cosplayers spend money on things they enjoy, like clubbing, collecting baseball cards, going to the spa, whatever - as long as you take care of your necessities first, there's no harm in it.

Now, if you're spending money on cosplay instead of paying your bills, then it's time to reevaluate your decisions...

Do I feel bad?
Yes. All the time.
My mom is the one that puts forth most the money for my hobby. (I am 15 turning 16 with no job.. )
So loves my cosplaying and supports me completely.
I feel bad mostly because she let me borrow money, and I couldn't even keep track of how much I owed her. And it got obvious that I wouldn't be able to pay her back.
I guess at this point, it has been established that my birthday present is partly that debt.
But me being me, I always talk about doing more cosplay.. And I know it overwhelms her.. And I am trying my hardest to thrift the items I need or sew them myself. (only problem with that is that she would be paying for the sewing lessons and a sewing machine.. Which she has already told me she was fine with.. but still)
I am not the best kid either. I am smart in the head, but when it comes to keeping on top of things that the house chores or school work, I tend to lag.. (mostly due to planning cosplay or just reading fanfiction/watching anime) Also, even though she helps pay lots for cosplay, I don't exactly cut back on other things I may want to buy.
I just wish there was some way I could show her I appreciate everything.. Because I know sometimes she thinks I don't appreciate it. Since my mom cosplays as well, I want this to be fun for the both of us.. For the most part, it has.. But I have tons of guilt. (also, getting a job is not an option as I have school.. But I have considered baby sitting my brother's baby for money or to babysit her in exchange for sewing lessons from his GF)

I think I'm more ashamed that I've spent 300 dollars or more on one costume and have neglected all the rest.
On top of that. Bills..
So to answer your question, Yes.

Currently, I am not the least bit ashamed of how much I spend on my costumes. Honestly my costumes get used way more often than my normal clothing.

It's a pirate's life for me! Savvy?

I'm currently having a set of armor commissioned for $1,500....Had I not spent it on cosplay, my car would have been completely paid for. Needless to say, I'm feeling super guilty. On the other hand, I'm not currently struggling with money and am able to pay the bills, so I figure that's justification enough to spend that kind of money on my dream cosplay (At least that's what I keep telling myself )

Please check out my Facebook page!

Not really. To be honest, I don't really spend a lot in the grand scheme of things. The most I've ever really spent was $25 for some overalls from an online store, but that's it. Most of the other stuff I already have or it's junk I've turned into a prop. That and cardboard is extremely to come by.
Completed Cosplay:
Red Sniper (TF2)
Wolverine (Marvel Comics)

Jason Voorhees (Friday the 13th)

Leatherface (0%)
Macho Man Randy Savage

Hillbilly Jim (WWE)
Road Warrior Thor (Original Marvel concept)
