Jareth's "Dance Magic Dance" Outfit - Labyrinth

I'm looking for something I can whip up relatively quickly for a frien'ds costume party that's about, eh, 2-3 months away.

She loves Labyrinth so I thought that she'd flip if I showed up as Jareth.

So I started watching the movie, got to the "Dance, Magic, Dance" scene and fell in love with the simplicity of the outfit. Plus, I just adore the puffy shirts.

I don't have any rally GOOD stills or reference pictures, so if anyone can provide those, I'd be greatful. I'm just looking for over all tips (What wig to use, what kinds of materials, how to do the holes in his sleeves without the material fraying to heck...)

Thanks for all tips! Oh... if it helps, I'm on a rather small budget...

The reference I do have: (Blah for GIFs...)

Find or make a pirate-y shirt - something like Simplicity 3758

Leggings, yes, not too hard to find nowadays.
You can probably find the boots at a thrift store, and maybe even the shirt.
The wig - I've seen a great wig in Cosworx, I think it's called the "punk" wig or something like that.
Look in women's vests for a low cut vest like that...and the gloves... from what I can see you could almost use driving gloves or something. And a riding crop. XD

It's the Punky, and yes, I think it would be perfect for Jareth. ^_^

1. Be sure to add the cuffs to the poet shirt. My suggestion is buying some non-fraying white material, cut holes in large triangle shape pieces, and sewing 6 onto each cuff.

2. The grey riding pants have very faint patterns. If you purchase the pants (which need to be high waisted), get a grey fabric marker and draw the pattern in. The pattern is simular to a stone walkway.

3. The vest isn't a standard vest but almost a corset with shoulders and a high back. The front has three golden buttons and strips of leather (3 of them) across the front. The vest ends just at the waist point (mid torso).

4. The punky wig is a good start, however Jareth noticably has long strands of hair coming from the top (which a punky wig does not). I recommend getting extensions and sewing them into the top of the wig to add that extra bit of length.

I made this exact outfit years ago, total cost around $40 (including everything). It wasn't hard to make either.

Lucifer, I think I love you. ;_;

I have one more question: What kind of material did you use for the vest, and also, where did you get the necklace, or how did you make it?

You've been immensely helpful. And you make a lovely jareth.

I made the vest out of a cheap pleather. I reinforced it with interfacing to make it a bit more stiff (since cheap pleather tends to be flimsy). I had the zipper up the back, so you could just slide into it.

The necklace was made by a friend, but you could easily construct it out of sculpy or paper clay.

Glad I could help. If you need any other help just let me know

Also, what kind of white materials "don't fray"? That's a lot easier said than done, finding it that is. >>; I'm out out fabric shopping next month so I can always just ask for a specific type of material at the fabric store.
The cheap plaether idea is like, awesome though. x3 Yay, cheap stuff.

You could get the punky and sharpie a couple of hair clumps to make them blue, since he has a few blue strands, and I am ALSO completely INLOVE with that movie.. I grew up on it, so it's kinda sentimental, PLUS David Bowie is the best [hands down..srsly] musician alive. I have a sort of INCREASING FANDOM with him. ;']

But the costume really isn't THAT simple if you do it right..
The makeup is crazy, his sleeves are insane, the mini-jacket material is evil, and then there's a crystal ball, but that's only what I was going to do for my personal cosplay..

Truthfully, I'm saving him for until I can spend the time to bring his costume justice.

:/
I don't think it's the best idea for a last minute cosplay.

The punky wig is good for his hair...
On a side note: after you make this outfit (if you finish before the costume party) please post a photo! I love Jareth!

I found in the scrap area a yard of white vinyl, but matte (aka not shiny). It was meant to be used on lawn furniture I believe. You can also use fray-check on a white broadcloth and that'd keep it from fraying.

Yo-yo - Jareth did not have the blue streaks in the "Dance Magic Dance" sequence. Those streaks were only done for the "As the World Falls Down" portion, due to it being more of a masquerade.

I remember seeing a cosplayer doing this one once and they had stuffed the pants (overly so) for humor. It was freakin' hilarious! It seems you want to do a more serious version, but you could show up to the party like that for laughs. Then just take it out later.
