You could probably convert other cosplayers too.

I think I might cosplay Jack sometime... if I ever put the effort into it.

Also, Sweeney! I just those of something - you could totally be cosplaying Angelica cosplaying Jack.

I wouldn't suggest actively trying to convert other cosplayers though because that can get annoying if people keep shoving their fandoms in other people's faces. lol.

Jack as in Jack Sparrow? If you ever start getting a costume together let me know and I can point you in the direction of some good costuming forums and sites.

That is what I would say if I walked around one day without doing the facial hair and maybe if I wasn't wearing the wig, but normally, am aiming to portray Captain Jack Sparrow himself.

Dude. Cheer up, emo kid. Go to cons, make friends, become part of a group. That's how it works. Quit throwing yourself a pity party and go MAKE change for yourself. Go out, make friends, don't wait for them to just say "Oh, hey, guy I don't know! Group costumes?" Sitting there moping and getting all emo isn't going to change anything.

Reminds me of Chopper. Hahden the fahk up!

No need to actively convert them, just stick to subliminal messaging. =D

Totes Jack, as in Captain Jack Sparrow. I'll be sure to prod you about it, should I ever work up the drive for it.

Hm... I recall her having a taped on beard and moustache... and a wig... Hm... Cosplaying a cosplayer... cosplaying someone... hm... too much braining to do.

OP, I've seen you around before, moping the same way you are now. Just chill, man. If your sole purpose for cosplaying is just to "fit in," you're doing it wrong.

I started cosplay at 15 and didn't actually make cosplayer friends until I was 22. And even now they devote themselves to other series instead of ones that I like, and we only meet up just to say hi and stuff. I've yet to be a part of a cosplay group, particularly because I choose less common series and because my non-cosplayer friends can't put in the time, money and effort it takes to cosplay.

But I'm not doing it to fit in or to be part of a group. I cosplay because it's fun. I like making stuff. I like putting things together and transforming into a different person. Don't focus on the negative, and don't be mopey.

lol alright that works!

Awesome! Yay! More Jack Sparrows! I guess my subliminal messages are working.... lol jk, I wasn't trying to subtly convert you.

Yea she did, but if I were to use the excuse that I was actually being Angelica as Jack Sparrow I would be referring to how she appears after Captain Jack Sparrow takes her mustache off and after she takes her wig off. This whole thing would become very confusing, so to avoid that situation I would just never go out in partial costume :P

Others have already said mainly what I've wanted to say, but I'll try to add my own two cents as well.

It can be nerve wracking to try and meet with people and I fully understand that, but just know that most of the time they are friendly. There are those few out there that aren't, but don't let them get you down. As for only wanting to be friends with people who are cosplaying the same thing, everyone has their own tastes and preferences. What are you going to do when they no longer want to cosplay that series anymore? Try to branch out just a little in terms of making friends. I have friends out there that don't like Anime as much, yet we still have fun cosplaying and talking about what we are into. It's all about finding a common ground.

But I do understand the wanting to cosplay the same things that your friends are cosplaying. When I was dating my ex at the time she was into cosplay and wanted me to be into it, so I said okay. We did Bleach and it was fun and all, but afterwards I had this mindset that I had to do EXACTLY the same series the person was doing, otherwise I couldn't cosplay. I was weird at the time and it sucked, but now I just do my own cosplays while hanging out with my friends. We may not be doing the same thing but we're still having a blast. Cosplaying is all about having fun.

I mean, I met several people at photoshoots and gatherings and I try to keep in contact with them but even with facebook, cosplay.com, the convention forums, deviant art and e-mail, I may have like a 1% success rate in finding these people. And the people I do eventually become friends with are usually the people I room with at conventions or friends of friends.

When I see my other friends form cosplay groups they are very successful. You be surprised how one of them organize a small little birthday meetup and like 100 people showed up. I tried to do the same thing hoping I could get like 5 people and 0 people showed up.

When they organize these, is it people they know? Are they using the contacts they've made? Discussing scheduling with people who might want to go? Are they talking to friends and having them tell a couple their friends? Or are they going to a con, seeing people dressed up from the same series and making friends with them? That's always been how I've made friends at conventions. Just going up to people, complimenting them, getting a few pictures, and then shooting the breeze for a bit. Then, if you hit it off, you pal around together for a bit. If not, you call it a wash and move on. Maybe there'll be others.

It sounds to me like you haven't established yourself the way you want to. People respond to confidence. If you're desperate, people don't really gravitate toward that. It can put people off. If your posts in this thread are any indicator, it tells me that you aren't very confident in your interactions. You've mentioned making friends. Why don't you ask them what they're doing. What kind of costumes, if it would be okay if you got in on it, if they'd be interested in doing something with you, etc. If they're not into the series you are or vice versa, then you have to call it a wash or grin and bear it and go with the group. Try again with other people. Now, this is what's worked for me. Maybe I'm wrong. But I DO know it can and has worked. Some of my best friends I met this way.

I don't know if people should be trying to help this guy out since he told someone on the singles thread to go hire a escort instead.

At this point I don't think anything is going to help. People are trying to help you, and you keep saying you've tried it, or it's not helping. Or even bringing up more scenarios into the question, like in the beginning I just knew you wanted to get a cosplay group, now it's a general big group of people. Once again, it's not easy to get that many people. And like most people, I'd rather have a small handful of friends than huge list as that would get so tiring to deal with at cons. Having to see 50+ people and try spending an equal amount of time with them.

On another note, call me a bit impressed to see someone who has been on the bad list on several other cos-comers blacklist for what they say within such a short amount of posts. Normally, ProudAsian gets the reward.

You know? I just read through this discussion, and I find myself struck by how AWESOME the cosplay community tends to be. So many people contributed thoughtful, heartfelt, and really sound advice; they even kept on trying to help the OP when he dismissed their advice so ungratefully. Everyone who replied to this in a well-intentioned and meaningful way has my admiration!
