One thing that helped me out when I was learning was, I always took a lot of photos even if I edited most of them out later. For instance, if I am shooting close, I will do a bunch of different shots from head-and-shoulders to full body shots while moving around and trying to improve on each type. If I am shooting from farther back, I will try different angles and backgrounds that seem pleasing at the time and decide what worked best during the editing phase.
Then when you are editing, try to evaluate every shot and remember your train of thought at that time. Ideally every shot is an improvement from the one before it -- this means that your reasoning or adapting (as a photographer) was working in a good way.
