Lucy Heartfilia

I posted part of this question in a separate thread but now that I'm becoming more familiar with the forums, I think it's better suited here.

I'm facing a dilemma with my Lucy Heartfilia cosplay. I need to have it finished before the con at the end of September but no clue where to start!

I have no time to order a skirt (since they all ship from China) so I'm thinking about making it - I found a tutorial that should work nicely. But should I do 1" or 2" inch pleats?

Also, I haven't received a response about a pattern for her shirt so I'm considering buying a basic button-up, throwing on a zipper instead, chopping off the sleeves, and trimming in the same blue fabric as the skirt. I'm not happy with the materials these dress shirts are made from but I don't know what else to do. Any better ideas?

So, any advice would be WONDERFUL. Here is a reference for Lucy.

Your link didn't work for me, but a quick google search tells me that her pleats are pretty wide, so you could probably do 2 inches.

I'm not entirely sure how I would go about the shirt any better than you suggested, but the color for the trim seems to be a little bit of a lighter blue than the skirt (like the hairbow and skirt are one blue and the trim is a shade lighter). However, if you can't find the right color you want, I'm sure you could use all the same and still be fine! Those kind of details aren't always that important.

I have one more question about the skirt. I'm not sure if I should do a zipper with a clasp or an elastic waist band instead. Someone mentioned on a blog that an elastic band would distort the pleats - is that true? I'm new to sewing and I'm a bit worried about getting the right fit with a zipper but I don't want to ruin the skirt by going with elastic.

Going with a zipper would be a safer bet. You can get ones that aren't very visible if you're worried about it showing, and I've never run into too many problems matching colours. Although, as you're new to sewing, you might want to practice a bit first because putting in a zipper, and keeping it straight can be challenging.. Or maybe it's just me :P

zipper, while harder to do than elastic, will make the whole thing look better.

You could also get away with a placket closure, which is kind of like a pocket with no pocket in it, and easier than installing a zipper. I did a lot of plackets in my early sewing days.
you hide the placket deep in a pleat and it won't expose anything unwanted
Nothing is impossible, but some things are very expensive.

My Etsy shop: http://www.etsy.com/shop/penlowe I make non-fitted custom things to ship within the continental US. I only do fitted garments for those whom I can meet in person.
