More than snapshots, maybe?

Hello! While I'm never going to be a pro photographer, I do go to cons and I would like to be able to take as nice photos as I can. Something a little better than 'snapshots'. I have a Nikon coolpix s9100, if that helps! I've been practicing with my kids cosplays and just around my house so I've had to make do on backgrounds, except for when we went to the museum, that was awesome. . So, what I'm looking for is hopefully some tips on getting the most out of the camera, advice on framing and color and well..anything really! Thanks in advance.

Here are few of what I think are my best/favorite shots.
