New to Cosplay, Need Help!

Greetings, Programs!

I'm attempting to make a Shadow the Hedgehog costume for Halloween and an upcoming convention. I have no idea how to approach it. Here's the basic design as well as some questions I have:
Shoes: Old pair of sneakers covered in cut-up t-shirts (Should I use a different material? How do I go about cutting patterns?)
Lower body: Pair of all black sweat pants
Upper body: Based on a design I found on deviantArt-search Shadow jacket (Fabric choices? No sewing experience-where do I go? What material can I use to fill the quills?)
Gloves: No clue how to do these.

Suggestions and feedback would be deeply appreciated!

What exactly are you doing? Are you doing what would be called a gijinka (making an animal character into a humanized form) or half and half (not really a furry [full mascot style], but not really a human either)? You said hoodie, which leads me to believe more gijinka..Are you going to style a wig or something into the spikes rather then wearing a mascot head?

You're ideas seem to work. You can cover the shoes in whatever you want really..That's not a horrible idea if you never used the shirts anyway..

Do you want the "big hand" gloves like they have? Look for things like mario or mickey gloves in the halloween stores or party city. If not, I would go with regular glovesthen go to walmart and buy styrofoam rings. Cover them in paper mache, sand, paint and wear them..lol

For the hoodie, we would need to see exactly the picture you are going from to help you, so can you post that?

Here's the link to the hoodie design.

Regarding the gloves, yes, I planned to just use plain cloth gloves.

Thanks Jason.

This seems like it could be a really cool concept art for making it. Assuming you are going the gijinka route that is. (Credit to anthurishinkix at Deviant Art for the image.)

Also, thanks to JasonTerror for introducing me to the term gijinka. I'm fairly new to cosplay and had never heard of it. Really cool.

UPDATE:
I'm basically done with the shoes, and although I didn't cut up the pieces very well, I'm happy with the results.
I've also got the design for the gloves pinned down.
I plan on buying a black wig.
This just leaves the jacket. I know I'll need to get some black and red fabric and cut out some patterns, but again, I don't know how to sew. Are there places I could take it to, or should I post an ad on craigslist? Second, what kind of material should I use to fill the spikes and tail? And what about the chest fur? Should I use fabric or faux fur?

I appreciate the responses!
