Sano Binding Advice

I'm looking to put together a Sano cosplay from Rurouni Kenshin in the next few months, but I'm a little conflicted on my binding options. I think using wide elastic is my best bet because the chest/stomach binding will be exposed, but I want it to look like natural fibers or bandages. The elastic just doesn't look quite right on it's own. Anyone have any ideas on how to bind/wrap while making it look realistic? Maybe bind with elastic underneath and then cover it with cloth strips?

On a similar note, would the same methods make sense for the lower leg bindings?
