Painting Fabrics?
Arighty, well I plan on making Aryll's dress (from the Zelda game Wind Waker; She's just so damn cute.) but she has these two huge flowers on her dress. Well they apart of the pattern really, but my question is ...
Should I paint these Flowers on? (If I do, I'd be using arcylic paints I think) Or Should I use another fabric, like felt or cotton and then just sew them directly on? I'm aiming for something that won't look too stiff (and I'm afraid that the paint will stiffen the cotton fabric). So guys, what's the verdict? paints? or just a different coloured fabric? don't use acrylics! You'll have a big mess on your hands. Get fabric paint (not "puff paint", but actual fabric paint.) It's about $4 per color; my favorite brands are Lumiere and Versatex. Lumiere is a bit stiffer than Versatex, but wears better (I've had fine lines on silkscreens done with Versatex wash out).
You could also use steam-a-seam applique sheets to iron-applique them on (I'd use cotton for the design, it's the easiest). There's also hand or machine appliqueing, but steam-a-seam (and similar brands) work well for something you're only going to wear once or twice. The least stiff result would be yielded by appliqueing cotton flower cut outs to the dress without using an iron on transfer method. This is the most time consumming method, though, and you'd have to add a bit of paint to get the coloring of Aryll's dress. If I were making it, I'd probably just go with fabric paint. |

You could also try making an iron on transfer and adding that to the fabric depending on the fabric that you are using. Its like those t-shirt kind and it shouldn't make the fabric stiff.Just follow the directions on the packaging(I am going to assume that you are using an iron on friendly fabric like cotton or something).Or you could make a stencil and paint that onto the fabric. If you do end up painting it you can also look for Tulip brand BRUSHABLE fabric paint, this paint is great! It doesn't make the fabric stiff and it covers nice and evenly and it ends up looking nice and bright like the bottle... Fabrics tend to get stiff when you add more than like 3 coats of paint. Good luck with your costume!
