Major Tangles!!! Help!!!
I just bought a 60 inch, long, blonde, synthetic wig for Chii for 10$. I took it out of the package and it was a little tangled on the ends, so I thought I might brush them out. Now all I have is this huge tangled mess on the bottom half of the wig. I tried using a detanging comb and a pick with some leave-in conditioner, but it's not doing anything. Is there anything I should try before I throw in the towel with this fighting mass and just buy a new wig?

Well, use the handle of a comb and just take it nice and slowly. I had a tangled mess for a wig and after a half an hour on working on each side of the wig very slowly, I finally got it to come out. You just need a lot of patience...Don't try to tackle too big of sections either. Untangle one section and then move on.

$10!?! No wonder it tangles so fast... I guess you get what you pay for.
But seriously, definitely start from the bottom and work your way up. I just use a regular comb using the wide toothed end--the teeth are wide enough to let more than 3 strands of hair to pass through, but not so wide (like a wide toothed comb) to let the hair bunch up and tangle.

Honmestly, when you buy a cheap wig, you're just throwing your money away. And once those long, cheap wigs get in knots, they're pretty much lost. When you try to untangle it, chances are the fibers will distort more. You'll notice them looking frizzy at the ends. These frizzy ends are just going to bind themselves up again in new knots.
My recommendationg would be to chunk it. The only thing it could possibly be good for now is if you want a spot of practice with cutting a wig.

Everyone has already stated the quality issues, so I won't go there. Wigs are expensive, and not everyone can afford the $60+ wigs.
I suggest trying some detangler spray. Leave in-conditioner is okay, but the spray won't weigh your wig fibers down. The Safeway supermarket brand does wonders for a tangled wig. Just be sure, as stated, to use a wide tooth comb and work in sections. Patience is also required. Hope it goes well.

STOP. There are only TWO products made for real hair that you should EVER use on a synthetic wig. Aerosol hairspray is the first, for styling.
The second is what you need. You need Afro-sheen. Go get an aerosol bottle of that and some orange-clean. Clean the wig thoroughly and let it dry, then spray it liberally with afro-sheen. Use your pick and tackle small sections from the bottom, up. It'll take a while, but it should detangle without ruining. Cheap wigs can be made to look very good with the right know-how. |
