Revolver Prop

Im in need of a revolver for my K costume. Is it possible to construct one with similar metal parts from Lowes/Home Depot?? Would they even have similar parts??

It would basically work like a real one, but not function the same. For example, the cylinder would flip open, the hammer would pull down, and trigger would move.

What parts do you suggest I use??

K's revovler:

Thank you.

Sounds like you should just get a replica weapon. They take a real gun and permantly plug the barrell so it cannot fire plus change a few other parts to prevent it from being converted to fire.

If you want it to be made of metal and look extremely accurate you would have to get all kinds of milling equipment and CnC machines. You can only get it to look so accurate with hardware store materials and standard shop equipment.

But if its for con use I wouldn't recommend using metal at all. I always use plastic/wood and paint the tip of the barrel bright orange.

That should be your saving grace. Click on Spring Pistols.
It should be in the middle of the list. $29.99. You'll need the 6 inch.
Once you get it, gut it (keep the parts. 1) to put back together after the con/shoot, and 2) to show to staff / security that it CAN NOT fire anything at all)

You can paint it silver with a good model paint (airbrush should be the best method)
Make sure to leave it alone long enough to fully dry. (nothing worse than silver fingers)

...Just my little idea for yas. Take it easy.

What con were you planning on bringing this con to? Because I don't think that any con would let you have a metal one inside, even if it doesn't work. But I would check with the convention staff first though. Until you find out, I suggest going with GaijinTenshi idea, get an airsoft.

Thanks for replying. I wasnt really planning on buying a real one. Id much rather make one from scratch.

dheth, since you say that its best not to use metal, do you think the barrel can be made of PVC, and the cylinder out of wood, that would be carved up a bit??

Thanks.

What kind of tools do you have laying around? A drill press? Lathe? Plane? Wood chisel? Scribe? Drill? Scroll saw/skill saw?

You'll need em.

Materials: PVC tube with .357 inch diameter inside measurement (or something close. 1/2 inch works too). Wood that is about 3/4 inch thick, or thicker, depending on the outside diameter of your tube. A block about two inches across, or a two inch diameter dowel rod.

Start with the cylinder. Either cut a block to the right length and lathe it round, or use a dowel rod and cut it where you need it. Mark the round wood piece on the flat end, dividing it up in to six sections. In the middle of the section, near the edge of the block, drill a .45 inch diameter hole (or a hole that is the same diameter as the inside of your PVC barrel) all the way though. Use the wood chisel to carve out the rounded depressions in the cylinder between the chambers. (use a picture as a guide).

Cut the shape of the frame, thats every part of the gun thats not the barrel or the cylinder. Inlcude the trigger guard, and the hammer if you'd like. Cut a hold in the middle of the frame piece thats large enough to admit the cylinder. Center the cylinder and glue it in place. Attach the tube to the frame, and attach the spring housing below that. Use a strip of your wood across the top to make the accessory bar, then sand and paint.

Thats about as quick and dirty as it can be made and still look good.

Adding detail is where this piece will shine. If its just for holster fill, then you may need to add some rounded bits of wood for the grips, and maybe detail the hammer a bit. If you're going to be waving it around, then the more detail the better.

Make it a point to paint the end of the barrel orange, and get to know the con security people. Let them know you have a prop weapon and show it to them. Ask permission before you bring it on the con floor. If they say no, then leave it in your room or bag. Thats the only bad part about making realistic prop weapons. Not many places will let you carry them.

Sounds like a good plan there, thanks very much.

I should have most or some of these tools you mentioned. My dad has many many tools and such. It will mainly be for holster at ACen, but it'll be out of holster for pictures and playing around, acting like the character with others cosplayers cosplaying the same series.

Is it really nessecary to paint the tip orange??

Yes, its necessary. Lots of reasons, too many to go into here, but from 50 feet, the shape of a gun is the shape of a gun. The police aren't too keen on people waving gun shaped objects around in public.

Like I said, check with con security. You can skip the orange paint if you have some orange tape you can put around the barrel, or an orange cap, and the con folks are ok with that. Again, check with them first.

Ok. I never thought about that. I guess I shall use orange paint then. =D
