Hey guys~! I'm doing a panel on being a cosplayer of color at Aselia Con in 2 weeks and thought you guys would be an excellent source of reference. I want to discuss a variety of positives and negatives about being a cosplay of color, so tell me: what has your experience been so far?

Have you ever had people say negative things to you about being a Black cosplayer? Are there links you can give me to show these comments in real time? Or have you generally not had any issues?

I ask because I read an article written by a fellow Black cosplayer and she was told: "Your cosplay is wonderful but this character isn't Black." I thought that was interesting seeing as how most of the people that cosplay in America aren't Asian therefore doing the exact same thing that the commentor had an issue with. Anyways, it'd be nice to hear from the community.

So far, so good. I have more things said negatively about my weight then about the color of my skin. I guess weight trumps being black? =/

Personally, no. I do know a lot of others have though. Typically, like I said, it is more about my weight. I've been called ugly and fat so much years ago that I ignore the internet whenever my picture pops up somewhere

I've always been really shy to go out to events because of my skin tone, I know that sounds really lame and awful but in the area I live in there is like no other black cosplayers and barely any other black kids in general. For a long time it was like embarrassing I guess to go out in public with my skin tone. and Like I said I get that sounds awful but is anyone else having this problem?

Yeah i know its really not the same but you really shouldn't care what others have to say when you cosplay. We cosplay because its fun and it shows our love for the character.

*blink* I haven't posted in this thread in a long time. Just thought I'd say hi.

To repeat a question asked earlier, what's everyone working on?

i know this feeling as I was the 1st black girl in my whole school class out of the other 3. Felt like if I stepped out of line or did something odd I'd be judged cause of my skin. Had that same feeling when I started cosplaying but after one good comment someone randomly said to me I stopped thinking of the bad what IFs and just start having fun.

it isn't really that I care, It's just really embarrassing to be called out in a large group because of your skin tone.

I haven't posted anything in here for a while. I'm working on some props for Kunimitsu (Tekken) and Painwheel (Skullgirls).

I have the same problem as you do! I'm afraid of cosplaying outside of my skintone. The thought makes me feel uncomfortable but I wish that didn't stop me -_- well I guess I would be okay cosplaying out of my skin tone but only in private I feel I would stand out too much at a con if I was cosplaying a lighter skinned character. It's awful.
