Leather (Hugo, Suikoden III)

Okay well I was thinking about it.. and a while ago I decided to make Hugo's belt out of actual leather. Otherwise, it won't achieve the same look.

So the question is... anyone here know how to work with leather? ^^;; I don't tool in the designs on it, those will be seperate... but actually makeing it, putting big hooks and eyes on the back, and then making the sheath for his weapon.. yeah. @@ (Sheath will cover up the hooks/eyes, unless someone thinks that won't work. ^_^)

Another small question... his bracelets? I'm pretty sure making the ones on his arms won't be a huge problem (thinking wood) but the ones on his ankles.. should I make it so they seperate to get them on? They don't look that loose... @.@;;;

I don't know that you'd have to make the belt out of leather. You could make it out of a suede or vinyl-type fabric which you just trim with fur. That would make it much easier to apply the designs to it, than it would if you were trying to sew with actual leather. (Which you'll probably need special tools to work with. ) The designs which cover the belt could be made of actual leather, if you really wanted to be a stickler for authencitiy.

For the bracelets on his ankles, I'd use some type of stiff foamy material. Something with a little give so that you could slip your feet into them.

Wow. This costume looks like a lot of work. Good luck with it.

Maybe not leather unless u can get those string like things that look like leather/suede. Oh.. I'm playing suikoden 3 right now..hehe. I like Chris and that one blonde guy that likes her. hmm new cosplay? nah too hard!

If you DO wish to use leather (I don't advise it cos of the horribile soreness my fingers got after sewing the stuff together) then you might wish to invest in one of them handy leather punches...if you work without one then you can carefully cut small crosses and stick your eyelets through that....

Hehe...Hugo of all characters! I wanna be Fred at some point!

Amethyst- I -want- to make it out of leather. Trust me, I've considered others.. but I'm a horrid perfectionist. I do already have leather sewing needles. ^_^ My mom had to fix a pair of shoes not long back. ::Ponders foot things:: What do you mean? I wouldn't want them to break while I was running around... ^^;;; My idea of foam is kinda flimsy sooo enlighten me. @@ lol

L^3rd- I know where to get those kind of cords.. ^^ Surprisingly the local JoAnn's has them. (I only know cuz I worked there. @.x) and it comes in varied colors.

I would definitely suggest getting some hand-leather working tools.. you might be able to find something from a tack shop, or something like that. I'll need to hand-sew Luc's boots from leather, I'll be doing that by hand, with leatherworking needles (straight and curved) and that stiff string stuff... It will take time and patience and your hands will hurt horribly, but it can be done n.n

By foam I mean this stuff:

Foamies. The 1/4" thick stuff. Of course, you'll probably have to layer it to the proper thickness. - Cut out several rings and stack them and glue them together, leaving a hole just big enough to put your foot through. (The foam should give a little to allow your foot to pass.) Then, take a length of thin 1/8" thick foam and wrap it around the outer edge, creating a surface you can paint. That's kind of what I had in mind...

Gee, Shadra. Too bad you already have a Chris for your AX group. I was thinking of maybe going to that instead of to Anime Central, seeing as how a friend who was supposed to go to it with me isn't interested in con-going anymore. *Sigh*. (But I have another friend who lives on the West Coast, so AX would probably be a better choice...)

Oh, BTW, do you have those scans for Chris' outfit handy? (You could always just photocopy them, put them in an envelope and send them to me if you want to go that route instead of waiting until you have access to a scanner. I really appreciate this. ^_^) Good luck with the Luc boots...

AA: I'm not sure, I keep hearing either Aeris or Miyu or someone's gonna be Chris, but our list isn't verified on that, I don't know! ;;;.;;; but you should come to AX just to see us, I think!

As for the scans, GS3 volume II came in and that has a bunch of really good pics, so I gotta scan those too. I think tomorrow I should have a chance, providing I remember (I have a lot of stuff to scan -.-; raaah)

I think snailmail lives up to its name at my school o____o it takes forever x.x;;; but I'll try to get them to you soon!

I only worked at JoAnn's... ::Feels dumb, is dumb a lot. >.> hehe.:: I've never worked with it besides to cut the stuff (which always made me cry when people brought it up. u.u; ) soo.. how would it take to paint? I get the feeling it might just seep through... ::Blinks, has to say...:: I've seen the parts of Chris' armor you posted and I reeallyyy can't wait to see the finished... ^_^ (did you already post it somewhere else?)

All I need to make now is the fabric part of the garment. (Which Shadra's hopefully going to help me with. What I need more than anything are some close up images of the boots --the design which goes on the cuffs specifically.)

Still haven't nailed down what specific con I'm going to wear this to yet...
