Any particular character or what?
For my tail for my Kouga costume (actually a wolf, but it's not that big a deal I guess) I just used some 14 gauge wire to wrap around my waist and travel up and back down the tail (so two lengths of the wire) for strength... I then wrapped some foam around it for shape, secured it with ducttape, added the fur over top, sewed, and presto. It's done. Probably one of the more unorthodox methods out there, but it works for me... It's shapable and secure. There are some images of myself wearing the tail in my "In-progress" gallery if you care to see what it looks like. For a fox, I guess you'd need to sew two types of fur together: Brown and some then some white for the tip of the tail. Hope that's what you were hoping to know.

If you have a Renaissance Festival over there in California you can actually buy a real fox tail, like that was once attatched to a real fox (and it's humane, they buy the tails from a coat company who would have killed the fox anyway and thrown the tail away otherwise) they come in 15 different colors (some have white tips, some don't) I own two of them, a solid white one and a silver one with a white tip. They also sell them at dog shows for a lot cheaper ($20 at the Renaissance Festival and $7 at dog shows, but they only come in one color) because apparently dogs love to tear them up.

I usually use foam over top of 10ga wire like ChibiK3r0 does. It works but I'm going to try using a chain spine for my next one. Here's a few links that might help.

It depends on the fox. Shippo from Inuyasha has a huge cute tail that would probably be best recreated as something big fluffy and probably stuffed. Youko from Yu Yu Hakusho has a long thin tail that could actually be done quite effectively through use of white hair extensions.

The tails I have come down to about the backs of my knees when attatched to my back belt loop, and that's really saying something cuz I'm 5'8" and have really long legs. I'd estimate that to be about 20 inches. That's almost as long as Yoko's tail. Foxes are little animals, but they have some wicked big tails for thier size. And It's not creepy, It's tanned perfectly clean on the inside like a fur coat. Honestly, It's no worse than leather. They smell nice, too.
