Arrow How to make spikes (images from a Japanese wig styling book...)

My apologies to those who were waiting for me to send these images a few days ago! I've been frantically trying to finish my costume for AX2005 this weekend. Looks like I'll be up late tonight!

The spike on the blonde wig is made using a styrofoam cone that has been shaped with a sharp blade and held onto the wig scalp with gold-colored twist ties (if it were a dark wig then dark twist ties would be used). Strong double-sided adhesive tape is applied to the cone in order to make the hair stick to the cone. A hair extension was used for the extra hair.

The red wig utilizes the same principles as above, but stiff strips of paper are used instead of styrofoam. A small portion of one end of the paper is attached to the scalp and hidden pieces of hair from the back of the wig were snipped off to use for the long antenna.

Hope this is helpful!

In other photos, the stylist was using a blow dryer, styling hair spray and lots of Vidal Sassoon hair gel (the kind in the small red container).

This is wonderful! So many people have been asking how to get styles like this. I think that the Vidal Sassoon hair product pictured is a wax, not a gel, however.

You're probably right! Makes sense. I'm not too familiar with that kind of hair stuff. Heck, I rarely use simple things like hairspray!

The only problem I have with this is that the cone is clearly still there, behind the hair....is it supposed to be there permanently? Or is it just to support the hair while the hairspray dries? If it were only for styling, though, it wouldn't matter what colour twist-ties were used. :P

I noticed that too and was bugged by that as well. If they intend for that big white foam to stay there....they're crazy.

If you have a bigger photo I could try to translate it. Can't read it right now, it's too small for me to make out the kanji.

This is a very helpful article. O.O But I always thought ppl said hairspray ruins the wig completely. O.o; And the stylist is using it.

I believe the cone is indeed supposed to be a permanent fixture, and covered with hair all the way around (same with the paper strip...hair on both sides of paper.) Since the wig would not be usable for any other purpose than part of one's cosplay, I suppose it doesn't matter if the hairspray is applied permanently as well.

That's the largest size I could attach through Cosplay Forum. I'd be happy to send these images privately if anyone would like them larger-sized!

The wig style book was one that came with Cosmode 006, the one with FullMetal Alchemist on the cover.
