"anime" and longcoats... whats the deal?

only after intentionally looking for it did i notice...
soo many characters wear longcoats,
im probably missing something important, but i dont understand
why longcoats are so prevalent,
possibly even more so than spikey hair and gi pants (or other martial arts atire)

*update*

above has been answered, but i meant to do this as a two stage question

my reasons for asking though, are since longcoats and such ARE so common,
does it then become overrated, or a staple in character aesthetics?

and further more, does it then cheapen the uniquity and/or quality
of an original character (OC) by kind of being a "crutch"

i ask cause ive been eternaly revamping my OC for quite some time (since 06 or so)
and have yet to leave the concept phase
my hope is to be universal enough (with minor tweaks/addons)
to fit in both a LotR/WoT, naruto/bleach, or a mass effect/dead space setting

but still be a truly unique character, in design

It's like capes being prevalent in western comics.

They billow in the wind epically and draw attention to that character.

I see more longcoats than martial arts stuff. It's prevalent because it's shorthand for badass or mysterious or dark, and as Neelh said, they look good blowing in the wind.

They're also great for crossplay.

The hosts of "What not to Wear" seem to have a hate-on for full length coats and long, flowing skirts. I say stuff them and their opinions, they look amazing!
Not to mention how epic I feel wearing them around- I got this for christmas, I can't wait to wear it out and about:

(I got mine in red, it looks fantastic)

i kinda thought it might be a persona enhancement aesthetic,

personally i do think its cool,
and i always did have a thing against the hosts of what not to wear,

my reasons for asking though, are since longcoats and such ARE so common,
does it then become overrated, or a staple in character aesthetics?

and further more, does it then cheapen the uniquity and/or quality
of an original character (OC) by kind of being a "crutch"

and have yet to leave the concept phase
my hope is to be universal enough (with minor tweaks/addons)
to fit in both a LotR/WoT, naruto/bleach, or a mass effect/dead space setting

but still be a truly unique character, in design

im going to update the OP to reflect this now that the initial thought has been covered

All the cosplays I have are quite lenghty in coatsize ;D I think it just gives a badass look and makes a character look great.

Further more, when it's windy the coat goes like *woosh* in the wind, and it makes me feel even more badass! ;D

So I think that's kinda the point of long coats, making it a lot more badass. Now, on to the next bit. It's true that there are a lot of characters with coats, so they are becoming quite the generel trait for some heroes/villains and such.

But the great part of coats is that they can be very different in design. They have nearly limitless options and you can adjust them to the rest of the character's style.

This means that not every coat is the same and gives a different feeling, some designs are even timeless. Which would be great for an OC ofcourse. The best way to make a timeless/originless coat would be to find examples of coats in different times/origin and see what they have in common. (certain usage of leather for example is quite timeless)

You can also pick some attributes from certain times/origin to stylize it even more and to create a general coat that would fit into both LotR, Naruto, Mass Effect and whatever ;D

And having some interchangeable accessories is useful too- different bits of armor you can swap out, different belt pouches, little props, and so on. That way, you can customize your look to whichever universe you're looking to fit into. An adventurer from the LOTR universe would certainly have different armor and other bits than somebody from Mass Effect.

i guess im just kinda concerned that ill end up having an
overly GENERIC design rather than easily adaptable but still unique

Like people have said, it depends on the style. A plain longcoat might look boring, but with studs or straps or rips or lapel decorations or an interesting cut, it makes it look unique. This page has a lot of designs for gothic-style longcoats, while a more futuristic one may be made of vinyl/whatever and have a glow to 'em. A detective might wear a trenchcoat and a cowboy would have a duster. Or vice versa if that's what your character is.

If you take some time to think out a good design, it won't look generic, just badass.

thanx everyone, i feel a little more reassured that i wont end up being a "copy-paste"

now if only i can get over that empty/halfa55ed feeling, from doing a character
with "powers" (or tech) that cant be done for real
but that would be another thread

Hm...I don't know, but it's a good question to ask a character designer if they're a guest at a con!

Put on a long coat and find a tall place to stand on a windy day.

If you don't feel like a bad ass, you don't have feelings.
