Ah yes the lack of patterns, this is somthing my corner knows very well. You should see the patterns that we have twisted and mutated to make our own. My white Integra coat comes from a pattern that was originally supposed to be a big frilly riding dress/coat thing. It wasn't anything that I would be caught dead in, but look at what it became!

Abo-lutely!

I like to use this light tracing fabric stuff to copy the original pattern and alter the copy so if I mess up I still have the orig. to try again. It's also possible to sew the trace fabric together to see if it'll work before cutting the actual fabric.

Sometimes I trace out a new pattern, but most often, I fold and contort the pattern to fit what I need. Or, if that won't work, I use butcher paper to add to the already made pattern. That way I know it will stay semi-consistant with the correct size I'm shooting for, and the butcher paper will take a beating from the pins and such without tearing like no tomorrow. (Theater Trick)

Really, you should have seen Natchan's face when I showed her the pattern I was going to build her Integra coat off of. Like she said, it was a 1880's old west riding frock coat with huge puffy sleeves with about a billion buttons up the cuff. Her expression was the classic "You have absolutely lost your mind!"
But all's well that ends well!

That riding coat thing sounds hot, though. Puffy sleeves and millions of buttons on the cuff? <3

You didn't ask for cape ties till we were at the con, and then you never gave me your coat to fix it. (Have I whined enough yet?)

Yep, millions of buttons. They're bridal buttons that go from the wrist to just below the elbow. It's ankle-length, too! I think it would be fun to wear it with a turn-of-the-century (last century!) riding habit, complete with horse and side saddle. I have the ladies riding boots and habit skirt already. . . that's why I bought the pattern to begin with. My husband's family even has the horses and side saddle. Unfortunately, I haven't found the right fabric for it, yet -- or the time to sew it. (Sigh)

Okay, fine! Pick on the frazzled, lame-brain seamstress! I did 9 1/2 costumes in seven weeks. I'm lucky the only thing I forgot were cape ties! (Grin)

Oh, Sarah, you know I only tease you BECAUSE I love you. Otherwise, you wouldn't be worth my time. I really do think you did a good job. Who am I to talk, anyway? I can't sew to save my life!

Well, that's not entirely true, but there is a lot of screaming involved...
