Ooh please tell us where! I'm currently all alone in Tokyo and I want to go cosplay with other like minded individuals! All I have around me are old people [Nerima] and fashion snobs [Shijuku].

I have cosplayed in Japan (Worldcon), and had nothing but pleasant times with my fellow Japanese cosplayers, and made new Japanese friends. Other American friends of mine have had similar experiences at Comiket.

I believe that Proud Asian Guy is talking on a more local level. I have yet to deal with it myself, but i have heard stories of small secluded incidents.
On a happier note, I am very happy to find more people here in Japan! I personally have just recently picked up interest in cosplay, but have been a fan of not only anime, but Japan as a whole for as long as I can remember... I guess my Japanese grandmother helped a bit with that huh? XD

You can get the general idea of where and when the event is taking place but allow some liberties with the English translation of the events (consider "trust in grommet south Osaka" one of those very loose translations!)

I made my first attempt to brave the crowd in the cosplay area of Comiket this year, since on day 3 I had plenty of time while one of my friends picked up his millions of porn doujinshi. I'd say it looks like any other event in the West, only with the more strict rules about props. Saw plenty of men crossplaying, too. Even a huge gaggle of guys dressed as Touhou charas. So, my friend and I are going to return in winter crossplayed as Rozen Maidens.

Even with my earlier statement of the high turnover rate of shows getting old, there were still plenty of Sailor Moon cosplayers there at Comiket 74. I think if you happen to be going to Comic Market and are a mature adult, feel free to cosplay, just don't expect it to be a hyper fun lose-your-mind-go-crazy party like american conventions tend to be. It's a very relaxed time.

If you don't know japanese, just look around, your fellow gaijin stand out well enough.. ask them for directions.

I scanned the cosplay rules from the Comiket 74 catalog, since the post that started the thread was from a couple years ago. Maybe someone will translate this for us. *puppy-dog eyes* I have about a kindergarten level reading comprehension, so I am missing the important stuff. (I can read Yotsuba&! because of the furigana for every kanji, but far from reading a japanese newspaper)

If nothing else, this should help those that can read japanese to see what differences there are to the rules from past CMs.

I have not seen the picture of your costume and I cannot tell for sure.

All I can say for sure is that as far as it is not a live metal nor longer than 30 cm and meets all the safety codes, it should be ok.
There are a lot of safety codes not only for your props, but also for other parts of costumes and even for general attendee, so I recommend you to make sure you understand the official catalog. Unfortunately, there are a lot of misleading false info in the internet, and you have to check the official announcement by your own.

It is nice to hear that we will have new member in our community.

There are many people who might be helpful for you. Once you check other <Japan> forums, you will find some active foreigner cosplayers. Some of them have long experience in Japan and will be able to share their ideas.

I will recommend you to read some threads in <Japan> forum first. I would say once you understand Comiket rules, you will have good idea about Japanese cosplay scene. All you need to do else is to learn some local rules and some ticket system for some other events.


Yokosuka locates in convenient area to go to Tokyo. You can go to Tokyo in 70 min without changing trains, and to Yokohama in 40 min.
There are many cosplay events in Yokohama too.
Also, I know many cosplayers here will go to Summer Comiket (in August), and they might be happy to help you in starting your cosplay career in Japan.

So, I have a question about the amount of skin allowed to be shown on a costume at a Japanese event. How much is okay? How much skin is too much skin? The rules seem very murky, especially since I'm translating with my poor Japanese skills.

Specifically I want to know if bikini tops are okay. I didn't get to wear my Mina Majikina costume last year due to some things that happened, and want to try to wear it to an event this year.

It depends on the event. Recently, quite a few are "requiring" bodystockings to be worn under "revealing" costumes. But "revealing" generally isn't clearly defined. Bikinis, bellybuttons and cleavage seem to fly... at least on hot girls.
