Youkai Hakkai
Hello,
I have a question for all of you Saiyuki cosplayers out there, and anyone else who can offer advice. I plan on going to next year's Comic Con as youkai Hakkai. I know a lot of people have gone as Hakkai in the past, and since I'm fairly new to costume making (and definitely to sewing), I was wondering if anyone can tell me what pattern they used for his shirt.
For anyone else, here's a picture for reference:

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!

Yay! I'm not the only one that eventually wants to do youkai Hakkai! This is what you're talking about, right?
Anyway, I'm just doing Reload Hakkai for Anime Boston since I don't want to make the Sanzo in my group uncomfortable, but I'm definitely making plans when it's just the Goku in my group and I.
Here's the pattern we're starting with and modifying to fit Hakkai's shirt: http://www.folkwear.com/114.html
It has the basics and from there we're modifying it. I'm not sure if this helps you any.

Oh, that's awesome, thank you! That's the closest I've seen to how his shirt looks, and it seems fairly easy to modify.
And yes, that's exactly what I'm talking about. Yay...another youkai Hakkai cosplayer! We rule!

Heh...I was gonna wait until October to bring out the youkai version of Hakkai, but it seems as if my friends want me to do it sooner. When I get home, I can point you at a link that I came across with some more images. They're small, but... *goes into total fangirl mode*
Sorry I hadn't replied sooner. I had seen the thread, but I hadn't gotten online at home (where all my happy bookmarks are) for a few days due to work and school and just a general need to pass out for a few hours.

No problem at all. Thank you for responding! I'll be doing mine in July or August. I know it's still early, but I want to get a big head start on it so I'm not rushing around at the last minute. I did that with last year's costume, and it was no fun at all.
I'd love to see more images. I'm a BIG fangirl of youkai Hakkai as well!
Have you found any places to get the claws from? At this point, I'm thinking I may have to get some press on nails and file them into points.

There isn't much here, but man do I ever want more of the manga now *has only read through volume 5 of Reload*
*L* Yeah, I did the rushing thing with my Riku costume...it wasn't fun because it was also during finals. I need to have normal Hakkai done by April the latest, but I'm hoping to bring him out for a trial run in February. Though I'm getting talked into doing youkai Hakkai for April...I wouldn't mind, but...I don't want to leave Sanzo (and possibly Gojyo if we get the guy to come and cosplay) out of all the fun.
As for the claws, not yet. I finally managed to find some good ears awhile ago (I didn't want to go with the cosworx ones since his hair is behind his ears)...been half researching for myself and the Goku in my group since we hope to instill fear into people. If I find some good claws, I'll letcha know. Actually, I'm also going to prod the Goku in my group to get her to help as well.

Sorry for the late reply.
Ahhh yes...I've seen those pics. They're gorgeous, aren't they? Do you have a LiveJournal account by chance? There's a community there where they post new Reload chapters as they come out in Japan. They're on volume 7 right now, I believe.
So your Sanzo and Gojyo are against the youkai Hakkai costume? I think it would be fun to have him as part of the group. Imagine the pictures you could stage! Or is it because you and Goku would both be youkai, and they'd be normal?
I still need to find ears and such as well. I'm only really starting to look. I think I'm going to go ahead and order that pattern you linked me to. It's the closest one I've found, so thanks!

I'm doing Hakkai, too...I have everything but the green overshirt from Reload. JeiC, I'm new to this whole thing (Hakkai is my first cosplay). Is there a way for me to access a larger version of the pattern you provided, preferably one with general measurements, without having to pay for it? Thanks. ^_^"

I've nothing useful to contribute to this thread, other than a big WOO-HOO! for all of the Hakkai cosplayers, and Youkai Hakkai cosplayers in particular! Go you!

Sure! I'll PM you with my LJ link, Dawnatello. The Goku in my group and I are considering seriously doing it for Anime Boston. Now that we definitely have a Gojyo, I told her we could get a pic of her biting his arm...and I'm sure that we can come up with many more senarios for pics.
Oh, ears...I found some good ones. Go to Amphigory, and I think it's under latex prosthetics and ears, the moon elf ears look like they'd work nicely. I'm still stuck on the claws. Not sure if I need fangs for Hakkai though and I'm still trying to figure out what wig would work well as a starting point.
Draconargentum, I don't know of a way to get the pattern for free, but you can get it for a little cheaper from Denver Fabric's online store. If I was home, I'd give you the link, but alas, I really wish I was.

Thank you! I think this costume is going to be totally kick-ass if I (we) can manage to pull it off!

Hee hee! That would be a cute pic. And yes, I'm sure there are TONS of things you can do.

Thank you very much! I'll go check that out then. I'm thinking I'll probably do the fangs, just for effect. I got some vampire fangs at Hot Topic that I think will do nicely. You mold them to your teeth, and they just snap on and off. As for the wig, I have NO idea what to do there. Actually, that's the thing I'm most worried about, I think. I'm so afraid of trying to cut and style it and messing it up.

Heh...I used to have fangs like that, but I actually managed to break them. I might see about getting another pair. As for the wig...I was thinking of starting with Alicia S and just styling it from there, but I know what you mean about being afraid of cutting. I was petrified when I started cutting my wig for Riku, but just take your time and go to your references often.
Now claws...that's what I really need to get on the ball with (that and actually making the costume).

That wig's not bad. It seems like it maybe needs to be a tad more...poofy though. But I'm guessing that can be achieved with some hairspray or something. Thanks for the link.
I'm still thinking that I'll be filing press-on nails into points for the claws, unless I can find something better.
