A 'unique' bowling ball from Mystery Men.

For next summer I really want to cosplay as the Bowler from Mystery Men, because...well...Janeane Garofalo is awesome ^_^
It'll be an easy costume, except for her bowling ball:

Finding a skull won't be difficult, but finding a hollow plastic ball - much less getting the skull into it - is a different matter.

I was wondering if there are any pieces or products from a hardware or home decor store that I could use for something like this? I'm not one for fixing and repairing, so maybe there's something out there lol...ya never know. I'm going to keep searching, but I've had no luck so far and ANY help you guys could give would be appreciated.

Thanks!

If you really want to do this right it’s going to cost you quite a bit.

To make a mold you need to find a cheap rubber ball or a giant charismas tree ball little bigger then your Skull.
On the ball or ornament make sure you fill the air hole smooth with something like epoxy glue for the plastic mold line to the rubber ball you can’t do anything about that at the moment.
The mold compound of choice is Silicone but Urethane is less expensive.

And please go through and watch the instruction videos they are indispensable.
http://www.tapplastics.com/info/video.php?
For the silicone you don’t need a release agent except for where the two parts mold meets and make sure the ball is clean and try to line up the rubber ball mold line when you cast it with the silicone .
Also mask sure the casting hole at the top is at lest 1/2 wide in diameter so you don‘t pour the clear resin on the lip of the opening.

Clear-Lite Casting Resin (polyester) is the casting agent to use since you can cast in thicker layers but it might to get sufficient air and become tacky but EasyCast Clear Casting Epoxy is more of a plastic base agent it will dry smooth (not tacky at all )but you have to do more thinner layers.

The step is pour a small base layer into the mold without the skull in it for it to sit on.
Before you add the skull seal any holes in it with epoxy glue. Then glue the top scalp to the base layer of with epoxy glue. Then reposition it with you finger to the bottom of the mold again. Then slowly add layers thin layers till you filled it. The thinner the better since it will allow more air bubbles to escape.

When your done you should have only one seam line and bump from where the rubber ball hole was.
If you can get the giant ornament you could line up the opening of the ball with your pour hole so that you only have a one seam.

The likelihood that there prop department got in touch with a Acrylic(plexiglas) casting company to cast this bowling ball is high and a lot more effective but out of the scope for price to make the steel mold needed.

I would also contact the tap plastic people about this to get their input on this as well and make a copy of this for them to correct where it's needed.

gahh Bagu I love you, right now I was looking for those clear openning ones for ages.

If you can find a squishy foam skull you could for it through the opening of a lamp globe.

You can find replacements of these at some lighting stores.

Have you checked eBay lately? I just did a search and found one for sale, and supposedly it's by the same company that did the one for the movie. There's another one posted, but its $300

Anyways, here's the link to the first one.

Thats pretty sweet, but the wrong color. Her ball was a yellowish color.

Mystery Men was such a great movie....

Its like the league of losers in Marvel....

I never thought someone would beat me to asking this question. But I'm happy you did.

Mystery Men is made of win. Good luck with the costume (if you're still working on it, I'm a little late to the party it seems)

edit: I just now noticed this is a revived year old thread. But the information is still useful. XD

It is an actual bowling ball you can buy. The brand is called Ebonite. The one listed for like, 10 dollars is the right one, it's just the weight of it is awful. Your best bet is to probably pick up a cheap used bowling ball(like they kind they have at bowling alleys for people to use) and build a cast around it so you make sure you get the exact size of a regular bowling ball.

I've been a bowler for over ten years, and if you want to carry a bowling ball around with your for an extended period of time, make sure that you keep the weight on the light end. The lightest weight bowling balls usually run around 6 pounds and the heaviest at 16. For a women, try to keep it below ten pounds, especially if you do any kind of actually bowling type poses.
